Please meet Laurie. As many of you know, WRM opened a cold shelter for single women a few years back. This year was no different. In March, we began to close down as winter was over. I asked Lori where she was going to go, and her response was, "The streets., I have nowhere to go." We were not going to allow this to happen.
This is Laurie's story. In November of 2023, I was in a bad situation and needed to leave. I was limited in where I could escape. I stayed in parking lots and other areas to try and make it through the bitter cold. I was planning my next move, and a friend mentioned that Wenatchee Rescue Mission had a cold-weather shelter just for women. I went to the shelter and met the Wenatchee Rescue Mission staff. They took me in without any judgments. They have been excellent in helping me get my life on track and connected to services.
I am now on a waiting list for my place to call home. In January 2024, I received a message that no mother wants to hear. My son had passed away. I WAS DEVASTATED. Little did I know the Wenatchee Rescue Mission Staff were watching over me, allowing me to process my grief. They stuck by me the entire time. Gosh, I have to tell you there are many great people here who care for me. Not long ago, the staff asked if I would volunteer to sit at the front desk to answer phones and greet people. I said yes! I genuinely feel like I am part of this place now. I am grateful it was here in my time of need. I learned so much just being here. I will never forget it. Lastly, "All of us here don't have a lot, but it's what we got, and it's amazing!"
